Jose Mourinho changes Manchester United transfer plans because of Anthony Martial
Anthony Martial has improved so much over the past months that he has prompted Jose Mourinho to re-think his Manchester United transfer plans, according to reports.
The Frenchman netted against Watford on Tuesday night to bag his sixth Premier League goal of the season so far – scoring on average every 84 minutes – and was a constant menace at Vicarage Road.
It marks a considerable transformation from the summer, when he appeared to have lost the faith of Mourinho who desperately sought to bring in Ivan Perisic to replace him.
But, according to The Independent, Martial’s improved form and his adjustment to the tactical demands of Mourinho’s style have at last won him the backing of his manager.
The Portuguese coach is no longer obsessed with signing a new left winger – incredibly, he was still irritated by the failure to sign Perisic even as recently as just a few weeks ago.
Now the feeling at the club is that Martial is on the right path to becoming one of the biggest stars, and deadliest footballers, in world football and could gain the same status as Paul Pogba.
Mourinho is so taken by Martial’s renewed form he has now cooled his interest in both Perisic and Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann.
He was widely expected to move for a marquee attacker in the next two windows – Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale has also been repeatedly linked – but is now expected to prioritise other areas of the squad instead.
The Portuguese coach had wanted Perisic to supply crosses for Romelu Lukaku, but now Martial is doing both an excellent job of creating chances for the Belgian – although he has wasted many recently – as well as provided a goal threat as Lukaku’s drought continues.
Mourinho’s faith in Martial has been underlined by his growing role in the team, starting four successive matches, but there’s just one problem.
Martial’s form has not gone unnoticed by other European giants, and Real Madrid are now showing an interest in the Frenchman, with Zinedine Zidane seeing him as the ideal alternative to Kylian Mbappe, who snubbed Los Blancos for PSG.
