Arsenal news: Petr Cech can emulate Edwin van der Sar - Arsene Wenger

The Frenchman thinks that his current number one is good enough and fit enough to emulate ex-Manchester United shot stopper Edwin van der Sar.
The Dutchman did not hang up his gloves on Premier League football until the grand old age of 41.

And Wenger thinks that Cech will be able to continue playing at the highest level for a similar period of time. Cech, 35, joined the Gunners from Chelsea in 2015.
And his boss is hoping there are many more years left in the tank at the Emirates Stadium.

“He gets older, we all do that. But [as] he gets older, I think he is fitter than ever,” Wenger said. “He puts a lot of attention to the preparation. He is slimmer than before. I think he benefits from that.

“I remember van der Sar at Man United, I compare them. They are intelligent, they have great similar size, similar quality.
“And Van der Sar stopped at the end because he decided to stop — United wanted him to stay one more year longer. I don’t rule it out (Cech playing until he is 40), but that will only be down to the performances.

“He has lost some weight. Not too much — two-three kilos only. But it’s a lot if you want to make a horse lose a race, you put a jockey with one or two kilos more on the back, and the horse is quite big.

“I think he has done it by looking after his whole lifestyle. He has done it because he feels better and because he wants to be at the best. Petr Cech is a perfectionist.

“And you don’t make a career he has made if you have not that obsession, always to be at your best.”
